Epilepsy is a disease which has characteristic feature of frequent seizures due to abnormal functioning of nerve cells, called neurons, in the brain.

The diagnostic program consist of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), to give images of the brain as well as electrical studies such as an electroencephalogram (EEG to record brain waves.)

Treatments encompass medication, brain surgery, vagus nerve stimulation and experimental therapies that involve drugs, devices and surgery.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

The two main kinds of seizures are generalized and focal.

 Generalized Seizures

Generalized seizures caused due to irregular electrical impulses in the brain. They normally occur with no warning. There are six types of generalized seizures.

•             Tonic-clonic Seizure

•             Absence Seizure

•             Clonic Seizure

•             Tonic Seizure

•             Myoclonic Seizure

•             Akinetic or Atonic Seizure
